If you work at sea on a ship, boat, fishing vessel or other vessel you are a seafarer and this website contains information that is relevant to you regarding maritime education and training and certification in Ireland.

Seafaring is a strictly regulated profession. Certificates of Competency are issued by the Department of Transport for service on merchant ships and fishing vessels.

The Department of Transport regulates seafarer Maritime Education and Training (MET) in Ireland.  The Marine Survey Office carries out approvals and audits of seafarer education and training centres to ensure that they comply with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) and national regulations.

If you go to sea for recreation only this website also contains information about training and certification that is relevant for you as a pleasure craft sailor.
