Statistical Spotlight #17: Travellers in Ireland

This report ‘Travellers in Ireland’ is the seventeenth report in the Statistical Spotlights series. Spotlight publications focus on a specific topic and gather available statistical data to highlight trends or patterns. This provides a general overview of statistics available relating to the Traveller community in Ireland, and it contains key information such as Census data on the number of Travellers in Ireland (32,949) broken down by age and gender.   • According to Census 2022, there were 32,949 Travellers living in Ireland, an increase from just under 30,000 in 2011. The Traveller community makes up 0.6% of the population.

  • In 2022, approximately 13% of Travellers between the ages of 15 and 24 years were married, which was significantly higher than the same age range in the general population (< 0.5%).

  • From Census 2022, the counties with the most number of Travellers reported as living there was in Co. Dublin (6,196), Co. Galway (4,257) and Co. Cork (2,376). The counties with the highest Travellers as a percentage of the general population and the highest per capita was in Co. Longford, Co. Galway, and Co. Offaly.
