The Department of Children, Disability and Equality is JAM card-friendly

The Department of Children, Disability and Equality is proud to support the JAM card initiative.

By becoming JAM-friendly, we continue to build an inclusive workplace for our colleagues and enhance customer service for individuals with invisible disabilities.

JAM stands for “Just-A-Minute”. It is a free plastic card or app that helps people with hidden or invisible disabilities or a communication barrier to ask for “just a minute” of patience and support in social or business situations.

The JAM card is designed for use by people with a hidden disability or communication barrier who want an easy and discreet way to let others know they need a little extra time and support. They include people with a learning difficulty or disability, autism, ADHD, Asperger’s, and dementia. The JAM card is also used by people with a chest, heart, or stroke condition or who have a head injury.

The JAM card was originally developed by and for people with learning disabilities and difficulties at NOW Group, a multi-award-winning charity and social enterprise.

The Department launched the JAM card on International Day of Persons with Disabilities, 3 December 2025.
