Minister Moynihan urges parents to register for School Transport ahead of 8 May deadline

Minister Michael Moynihan TD, has today called on parents and guardians to complete their school transport applications and payments ahead of the Friday, 8 May 2026 deadline.

Minister Moynihan said:

“School transport plays a vital role in supporting thousands of families each year, helping children travel to and from school safely and reliably. By completing applications and payments on time, parents and guardians help ensure the service can operate smoothly, efficiently, and sustainably. I strongly encourage families to log-on to the School Transport Family Portal and complete their application or payment before the 8 May deadline. Timely registration allows Bus Éireann to plan routes effectively, deploy resources with confidence, and deliver a dependable service for the coming school year. With just one week remaining, families are encouraged to act now rather than leaving this to the last minute, as late applications or payments may result in a ticket not being available.”

Who needs to apply?

Mainstream applications are required for students who are new to the scheme, starting junior infants or first year, changing school or address. Families who have previously applied do not need to reapply unless details have changed, but must log-in to complete payment or submit medical card details.

Applications are also required for students living in living in Beneficiary of Temporary Protection Weekly Payment (BoTP) International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) and Emergency Reception and Orientation Centres (EROC) accommodation who are new to the scheme, starting junior infants or first year, or who have changed school or accommodation centres.

It is important that new applications are received as soon as possible for students who are new to the scheme for children with special educational needs (SEN), starting junior infants or first year, changing school or address. Further information on how to apply is available here.

Late applications or payments may result in a ticket not being available, and late applicants will not be considered for the Remote Area Grant for the 2026/2027 school year. The School Transport Family Portal will close temporarily from 8 May to 1 July 2026 to facilitate planning for the school year.
