Minister for Education and Youth Hildegarde Naughton will unveil a commemorative plaque today (Thursday, 14 May) at Ursuline College, Sligo which will mark its 175th anniversary.
During her visit, the Minister will meet students, teachers, parents and members of the wider school community as part of celebrations recognising the school’s long-standing contribution to education and family life in Sligo.
Speaking in advance of the visit, Minister Naughton said:
“Reaching 175 years is a remarkable achievement and a proud moment not only for Ursuline College, but for generations of children, young people and families across Sligo and the wider region who have been part of the school community.
“Schools are at the heart of our communities. For 175 years, Ursuline College has supported young people to learn, grow, develop confidence and build lasting friendships and connections that continue far beyond the classroom.
“The unveiling of this commemorative plaque, placed at the entrance to the original 1850 section of the building, is a fitting tribute to the vision, care and dedication of all those who have shaped the life of the school over nearly two centuries. It will stand as a lasting reminder of the school’s enduring contribution to education and community life in Sligo.”
Founded by the Ursuline Sisters in 1850, the school remains an important part of Sligo’s educational heritage. During the visit, the Minister will tour the historic campus, including buildings dating from the 1850s and early 1900s which continue to form part of the school’s identity today.
The Minister is also visiting Gaelscoil Chnoc na Ré where she will meet pupils, staff and families and hear about the work taking place to support children and young people through Irish-medium education.
Minister Naughton said:
“Gaelscoil Chnoc na Ré is making a hugely positive contribution to education in Sligo, creating a vibrant learning environment where children can thrive academically, socially and culturally through the Irish language. The strong sense of community and partnership between staff, pupils and parents is clear to see.”
The Minister will also visit Scoil Ursula where she will meet with pupils, staff, parents and members of the wider school community.
The Education Minister said:
“Scoil Ursula’s strong commitment to inclusion, care and respect for every child is evident throughout the school community. The opening of the school’s first special class in September 2025 marked an important milestone and reflects the shared commitment to ensuring every child feels welcomed, supported and valued.
“It is wonderful to see children learning alongside siblings, friends and neighbours as part of one inclusive school family, and enjoying together all that our education system has to offer.”
