Today, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Timmy Dooley TD, was pleased to meet with Ms Lila Frías, State Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture of Yucatan State (Mexico), who has been visiting Ireland with a high-level Mexican delegation comprised of representatives from national and regional government in Mexico and the Yucatan region.
Yucatan State has a well-developed commercial seafood sector, and with companies seeking to expand into European markets and with potential opportunities also to develop imports from Europe, and Ireland in particular.
Speaking after the meeting, Minister Dooley said:
“This was an excellent opportunity to engage with Minister Frías and Mexican officials. It was an opportunity to speak to the quality of Ireland’s seafood and the passion and commitment of Ireland’s seafood industry. Ireland has a long tradition of sea-fishing and aquaculture production, and government has invested in the future of our commercial seafood sector through a combination of national and EU funding, providing the supports needed both by industry and our dedicated marine agencies to ensure that our marine resources are used sustainably.
“Securing economically and environmentally sustainable fisheries and aquaculture production in a world facing a changing climate is a challenge that both countries share. We look forward to building on our relationship with Yucatan State government, and the federal government of Mexico also, and to continuing the conversation that we began today.”
