Ministers Heydon and Dooley attend EU Agrifish Council in Brussels

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon TD, and Minister of State with responsibility for Fisheries at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Timmy Dooley TD, are today attending the Agrifish Council in Brussels.

Key items on the agenda include the availability and affordability of fertilisers in the EU, and trade-related agricultural issues.

Speaking in advance of the Council meeting, Minister Heydon said:

“I am pleased to be in Brussels today for the Agrifish Council. In just over a month's time, Ireland will take on the Presidency of the Council of the EU. The Irish Government is committed to delivering a successful and ambitious Presidency, which comes at a pivotal time for Europe, when our focus will be on strengthening our competitiveness, security, resilience and sustainability. All of these themes are directly relevant to the agri-food and fisheries sectors.”

Commenting on the recent publication by the European Commission of its Fertiliser Action Plan, Minister Heydon added

“The rise in fertiliser prices as a result of the Middle East crisis will impact on the cost of food production and, consequently, on the economic sustainability and competitiveness of European farmers. I look forward to hearing more detail from Commissioner Hansen on how the Fertiliser Action Plan will respond to these pressures.”

“A strong, well-funded CAP, together with a functioning EU Single Market, remain the key mechanism for ensuring food security throughout Europe and supporting our farming and food sectors in response to geopolitical shocks.”

Also commenting in advance of the Council meeting, Minister Dooley said:

“I’m delighted to be in Brussels today where I will have the opportunity to meet bilaterally with Ministers of other Member States on fisheries issues in advance of Ireland’s Presidency.”
