Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs)

Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPOs) are a tool the State can use to help unlock land for housing. If negotiations to buy land fail, CPOs allow local councils and sometimes the Land Development Agency (LDA) to acquire land for public purposes. This includes building affordable homes, improving transport, and providing essential community facilities.

CPOs are especially useful when land ownership is fragmented, which can slow down big housing projects. By using CPOs, the State can bring land together and create a clear path for development.

The process includes fair compensation and engagement with landowners to keep things cooperative. This approach helps deliver housing and infrastructure projects that benefit the wider community.
