Housing Renewal: Tackling Vacancy and Dereliction

While smaller in scale, tackling vacant and derelict buildings is an important part of increasing housing supply.

What’s Changing?

• A new contractor-led renewal programme will focus on turning empty and run-down properties into homes.
• Local tradespeople and contractors will be able to work with local authorities and Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs) to bring these properties back into use.
• Local authorities and AHBs will be able to make early agreements to buy these homes, helping reduce risks and make it easier for contractors to get involved.

This approach will help increase the supply of social housing while also improving local communities.
