Meeting Traveller Accommodation Needs

The Government is committed to providing appropriate housing for the Traveller community.

Key Facts

  • According to Census 2022, 32,949 people in Ireland identified as Travellers about 0.6% of the population.
  • There are 12,367 Traveller households in Ireland:
    • 79% live in standard housing
    • 21% live in Traveller-specific accommodation like Group Housing Schemes and Halting Sites

What’s Being Done

  • Over €100 million has been invested in Traveller-specific accommodation between 2020 and 2024.
  • A further €34 million will be provided to local authorities to continue this work.
  • The Traveller Accommodation Programmes (TAPs) help local authorities assess and meet housing needs.
  • A new Caravan Loan Scheme allows Travellers to access low-cost loans to buy caravans or mobile homes for use on halting sites.

Improving Services

  • The Government is acting on recommendations from the Traveller Accommodation Expert Review to improve how accommodation is delivered.
  • New guidelines will be issued to improve the design of Traveller-specific housing and strengthen the role of Local Traveller Accommodation Consultative Committees (LTACCs).
