Strengthening Homelessness Laws

The Government is updating the Housing Act 1988 to make it stronger and more effective in helping people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

What’s Changing?

  • Clearer Rules for Local Authorities
The updated law will give local councils better guidance and a stronger legal framework to help them make fair decisions about who qualifies for social housing and emergency accommodation.
  • Focus on Children’s Best Interests
The new law will make sure that when decisions are made about housing for families experiencing homelessness, the best interests of the child are always considered.
  • Consistent Support Across the Country
Local authorities will receive clear guidance to ensure that assessments and decisions are made fairly and consistently, no matter where someone lives.
