The Government is committed to helping disabled people live independently and be fully included in their communities.
Key Facts and Actions
- Over 1.1 million people in Ireland (22% of the population) reported having a long-term health condition or difficulty in Census 2022.
- Ireland is working to meet its commitments under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which includes equal access to housing and support services.
- The National Housing Strategy for Disabled People (2022–2027) guides how housing and supports are delivered.
- The Government is increasing access to suitable housing and ensuring disabled people are involved in decisions that affect them.
Home Adaptation Support
The Department of Housing continues to fund the Housing Adaptation Grant for Older and Disabled People, helping people make their homes safer and more suitable. Funding will reach €130 million in 2026.
