What the Probation Service offers victims of crime
The Probation Service ensures that victim concerns are central to the work we do with offenders. We will respond promptly and sensitively to all requests by telephone or on a face-to-face basis. If the Court requests a Victim Impact Report, we will work in collaboration with the victim to ensure that the report accurately reflects the impact of the crime and the harm done. Victims Charter
Offender information
The Probation Service will explain how it manages the orders for supervision imposed by the Court. Personal details of individual offenders cannot be discussed in accordance with professional ethics and data protection legislation.
Securing an order for the offender to stay away
You can advise the prosecuting member of An Garda Síochána of your concerns and request that conditions to support your safety are included in bail bonds or subsequent Court orders.
Financial compensation
The issue of compensation may be considered when the Probation Service is completing a Court requested pre-sanction report on the offender. The Court may make an order for financial compensation which is payable through the Court Services.
Meeting with an offender
You can contact any Probation Office or the Victim Services Team if you wish to discuss the option of a meeting with the offender. You will be provided with the opportunity to discuss your own wishes and needs in this regard. The Probation Service will provide you with information on the Restorative Justice models which are used to assist victims and offenders who are both willing to communicate with each other with a view to repairing harm caused and to reach closure.
If you are the victim of a sexual crime
Victims of sexual crimes can meet with the offender, if the offender is engaged with the Probation Service. The Probation Service has in place a programme which provides a victim-offender mediation service for victims of sexual crime. Victim Offender Mediation is a process that provides interested victims with the opportunity to meet with their offender in a safe, controlled setting, assisted by a mediator and with the consent of both parties. The mediator facilitates a discussion between the parties for the purpose of addressing/repairing the harm which has been done.
