Celebrate the beauty of Rhododendrons during Rhododendron Week at Altamont Gardens, Co. Carlow

The Office of Public Works (OPW) is delighted to celebrate Rhododendron Week at Altmont Gardens, Carlow. In May, the gardens at Altamont are marked by the splendour of the Rhododendron collection bursting into flower. The very extensive collection of rhododendrons was first brought to Altamont over 150 years ago by Fielding Lecky Watson, father of Corona North who following her death in 1999 passed the gardens to the Irish State.

Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran commented: “A trip to Altamont Gardens, Carlow during Rhododendron Week is magnificent. The colourful array of Rhododendrons in full bloom is a sight to behold. There are a number of free tours available to the public throughout the week, so why not take the opportunity to learn more about the spectacular displays in this magnificent location."

Rhododendron week at Altmont Gardens runs from 12-18 May. It is during this week that the OPW showcase the highlights of the collection and explore the stories behind them.

The gardens are open daily from 9am to 6.30pm, access to the gardens is free. Free ‘Rhododendron Week’ guided tours will be held at 12 noon and 3pm. For tours outside of these times, bookings can be made at altamontgardens@opw.ie

Altamont Gardens, a large and beautiful estate covering 16 hectares in total, is laid out in the style of William Robinson, which strives for ‘honest simplicity’. The design situates an excellent plant collection perfectly within the natural landscape. The lawns and sculpted yews slope down to a lake ringed by rare trees and rhododendrons. A fascinating walk through the Arboretum, Bog Garden and Ice Age Glen, sheltered by ancient oaks and flanked by huge stone outcrops, leads to the banks of the River Slaney.
