The Office of Public Works (OPW) is pleased to announce a series of inclusive tours designed for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and Dementia and for the Sign Language community at OPW locations nationwide.
These tours are part of an exciting initiative to make heritage sites accessible to all. A series of sign language tours are available across the country at multiple OPW sites including Athenry Castle, Clonmacnoise, Dublin Castle, Kilkenny Castle, Portumna Castle and Rathfarnham Castle. Visitors can enjoy a unique experience led by an experienced guide accompanied by an ISL interpreter, highlighting the rich history and hidden gems at our OPW locations.
Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Kevin “Boxer” Moran T.D. stated "We are delighted to offer these inclusive tours at OPW locations across the country. It is important for us to provide accessible and engaging experiences for all visitors, and we are committed to expanding our offering of ISL interpreted tours and Alzheimer’s and Dementia friendly tours at heritage sites across the country."
Kilkenny Castle will host free Alzheimer and Dementia friendly tours in June, September, and December. These guided tours are specially designed for individuals living with Alzheimer's and Dementia, as well as their families and supporters. Led by trained facilitators, participants will have the opportunity to explore the period rooms of the Castle, learn about the artworks and history, and engage in a friendly and supportive environment.
The tours are free of charge, however spaces are limited. Visitors are advised to contact the site and book in advance to avoid disappointment.
In addition to these tours, the OPW, in collaboration with Transport for Ireland (TFI) is offering free access to selected heritage sites for senior citizens using the TFI Local Link service throughout the month of May.
These initiatives aim to make our cultural heritage more assessable to all and encourages visitors to avail of the OPW’s carefully curated and engaging visitor experiences. For more information please click on the following link: www.heritageireland.ie.
