Commencement of works for a new Divisional HQ for Cork County Garda Division in Macroom

New station to serve as Divisional HQ for Cork County Garda Division

Major capital project under the current Garda Capital Investment Plan 2024-2030.

The Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, Jim O’Callaghan, the Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Kevin “Boxer” Moran and Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly today attended the sod turning event to mark the commencement of the construction of a new Garda station in Macroom, Co. Cork.

The proposed state of the art facility represents a significant investment in policing, community safety and public infrastructure for the south. The new station will serve as the Divisional HQ for Cork County Garda Division, supporting the Government’s commitment to building stronger, safer communities by strengthening An Garda Síochána, expanding resources and modernising facilities to tackle crime.

The development of Macroom Garda Station is one of several projects being delivered under the comprehensive Garda Capital Investment programme which aims to modernise and improve Garda facilities nationwide.

Minister Jim O’Callaghan said:

“I am extremely pleased to be here today to join Minister Boxer Moran and Garda Commissioner Kelly to turn the sod on a much needed new Garda station in Macroom.

The new station in Macroom represents a major investment in policing, community safety and public infrastructure for the Cork Garda Division. It is central to delivering the government’s commitment to build stronger, safer communities by strengthening An Garda Síochána, expanding resources, and modernising facilities to tackle crime.

Government is committed to providing An Garda Síochána with the resources needed to deliver an effective and professional policing service. Having modern stations across the country are central to delivering on that commitment.

I have secured, through the National Development Plan, €2.18 billion to support major capital projects in the Justice sector from 2026-2030. €364 million will be invested in new Garda buildings for a rolling programme of refurbishment works at Garda stations around the country.”

The project consists of the development of a two, three and four-storey building with three standalone single-storey ancillary buildings and secure parking facilities. The new facility will comprise of 4,338 square metres of modern offices, conference facilities, staff support areas and custody suites, ensuring that An Garda Síochána is equipped to meet the needs of the community now and into the future.

I look forward to seeing its progress over the coming months and am confident that, upon completion, this new Garda Station will provide members of An Garda Síochána with a fit for purpose work environment ensuring they can continue to deliver their invaluable service to community of Cork and surrounding area.

This project showcases the close collaboration between the OPW, An Garda Síochána and the Department of Justice, highlighting their unified approach to delivering major capital projects. It is an example of Government’s commitment to delivering modern work environments with the capacity to meet future demands”.

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly said:

"The commencement of works on the new Macroom Garda Station is an important milestone for both An Garda Síochána and the local community.

This development reflects a significant capital investment in policing infrastructure and will provide Garda personnel with modern, fit-for-purpose facilities to support the delivery of a responsive, community-focused policing service across Macroom and the wider County Cork area."

l Investment Programme for the years 2026-2030 was developed following detailed engagement between An Garda Síochána, the OPW and the Department of Justice. This Programme identifies a series of estate projects reflecting Garda priorities and emerging needs.

Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration Jim O’Callaghan secured Cabinet approval for the Sectoral Investment Plan for Justice under the recent National Development Plan (NDP) Review. The National Development Plan Review is the largest ever capital investment plan in the history of the State.

The funding allocation of €2.18 billion negotiated by Minister Jim O’Callaghan will support major capital projects in the Justice sector from 2026-2030, an increase of over €800 million on the previous NDP in 2021. From this allocation €364 million will be invested in Garda buildings and €460 million will be invested in digital systems including body worn cameras.
