The Energy Conservation Unit in M&E are leaders in the field of energy conservation managing extensive programmes in both Central Government and in the wider public sector. We work closely with all the key Government Departments and agencies responsible for the delivery of Ireland’s Climate Change obligations, including the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications (DECC), SEAI and Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (responsible for Building Regulations).
The Optimising Power @ Work Energy awareness campaign (a large-scale staff awareness campaign) managed by the M&E Section, continued to deliver significant savings in 2024. The campaign primarily focuses on encouraging behavioural change and optimisation of existing control systems to eliminate energy waste. In 2024, the Energy Conservation Unit significantly bolstered the programme now achieving savings of over 32% in energy consumption and reducing CO2 emissions by 40,382 tonnes. Through our continued dedication and collaborative relationships with clients, we collectively accomplished energy savings amounting to approximately 104GWh — equivalent to powering 6,847 Irish homes. This resulted in a financial savings of roughly €11.5 million.
Beyond the OP@W Campaign, the Energy Conservation Unit provided Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) Design Services across diverse projects such as the LED replacement programme, minor energy initiatives, solar photovoltaic (PV) installations, and SEAI Pathfinder projects. This sustained commitment to energy efficiency and carbon reduction furthers the Government's objectives as outlined in the Climate Action Plan.
