I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Sir Desmond Rea who, as the inaugural chair of the Northern Ireland Policing Board, made an enormous contribution to the transformation of policing in Northern Ireland in the years after the Good Friday Agreement.
A man of tremendous integrity, dedicated to public service, Sir Desmond also served in a number of influential and important roles, as chair of the NI Labour Relations Agency, and the Local Government Staff Commission.
Sir Desmond also made a great impact in business and economics, as chairman of NIjobs.com, and directorships with AIB and United Dairy Farmers.
He also made an enormous contribution to education and academia, as chair of Stranmillis College and Methodist College Belfast, and as Professor at the University of Ulster.
My deepest sympathies go to his wife Professor Maeve Rea, his daughters, wider family and friends.
