Taoiseach Micheál Martin has pledged €72 million from Ireland to contribute to the global fight against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. He made the announcement at the Global Fund’s Eighth Replenishment Summit in advance of the G20 Leaders Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Pledging Ireland’s support, the Taoiseach said:
“Programmes supported by the Global Fund have contributed to saving an estimated 70 million lives around the world. Today’s announcement sees Ireland significantly increase our support for this vital work. Working in partnership with other countries, we can move closer to seeing an end to these terrible epidemics.
“By contributing €72 million to the Global Fund over the next three years, Ireland is demonstrating its firm commitment to global health, to fighting disease and to improving and saving lives.”
Welcoming the announcement, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Helen McEntee, said:
“Through the Irish Aid programme, Ireland has been proud to support the work of the Global Fund since its inception over twenty years ago. During that time, the Global Fund has made an enormous contribution to tackling these epidemics and strengthening health systems. This increased support from Ireland is a clear signal of our determination to continue to do what we can to make the world a healthier and safer place.”
The Global Fund supports over 120 countries across the world to end the AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria epidemics and strengthen health systems. In the 20 years since the Global Fund was established, the combined death rate from these three diseases has reduced by 63%.
Today’s pledge will see Ireland contribute €72m over the period 2026-2028. This represents a 10% increase on Ireland’s previous funding commitment of €65m for the period 2023-2025. Ireland is a founding member of the Global Fund and has contributed over €339 million since its inception in 2002.
