Taoiseach to meet Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, ahead of Ireland’s EU Presidency

Taoiseach Micheál Martin is in Rome today (Friday, May 22) to meet the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, as part of his programme of meetings with leaders ahead of Ireland’s Presidency of the EU Council.

The Leaders will discuss preparations for Ireland’s upcoming Presidency, which begins on July 1, as well as bilateral relations and international issues.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, the Taoiseach said:

“I look forward to discussing with Prime Minister Meloni today Italy’s priorities during Ireland’s Presidency of the EU Council, and how we can work together towards shared goals for our citizens and businesses.

“I will brief the Prime Minister on our plans to focus on improving Europe’s competitiveness, on working towards agreement on the EU’s next multi-annual budget, and on making progress on enlargement. We will also discuss the current economic challenges facing Europe including the impact of high energy prices on businesses and households.

“We will also discuss global challenges, including conflict in the Middle East and Ukraine and how Europe can best contribute to the resolution of conflict, the building of peace and the underpinning of human rights.

Ireland and Italy are good friends and partners and I look forward to discussing with Prime Minister Meloni how we can strengthen ties between us, including in trade, tourism, culture, and sport.”
