Established in 2012, the Irish Government Economic and Evaluation Service (IGEES) is the cross-government network of economists and policy analysts operating within the civil service.
In line with the objectives of the Public Service Transformation Strategy 2030, Better Public Services, IGEES is working to support the delivery of better public services, through an evidence-informed approach to the design and implementation of public policy.
IGEES economists and policy analysts work in all government departments and the Revenue Commissioners, providing analysis and evaluation to inform the policy development process. IGEES teams undertake analysis and publish research across a wide range of policy issues. Analytical outputs can include economic analysis, expenditure analysis, programme evaluations, ex-ante appraisals, social and distributional impact analysis, internal briefings, and analytical reports.
Over the past decade, IGEES has played an important role in strengthening policy analysis across the civil service, through the delivery and publication of analytical outputs, and through specialist recruitment, targeted learning and development programmes and engagement in knowledge-sharing activities and dissemination of research.
The cross-government nature of IGEES is a key strength in approaching strategic and cross-cutting policy issues. Working with colleagues within and across government departments, IGEES analysis and evaluation underpins evidence-based decision making, in areas such as education, healthcare, infrastructure and enterprise; as well as critical policy challenges that have faced the country including the Covid-19 response, Brexit and the Cost of Living crisis.
In furthering the greater role of data and evidence to inform policymaking undertake analysis, IGEES works closely with the Central Statistics Office (CSO) and National Statistical Service (NSS), building analytical capacity and increasingly deriving value from data to develop policy insights and research.
