Check Before You Dig

Archaeological monuments are a valuable record of earlier cultures and societies and are an immense source of pride to communities throughout Ireland.

While some archaeological monuments can be clearly identified above ground, others have low visibility or survive as sub-surface remains. It is important to Check Before You Dig to avoid damaging or disturbing these sites during any groundworks (including land clearance or reclamation). Use our online map to check your land for monuments .

Legal Protections for Archaeological Monuments

Archaeological monuments are protected in a number of ways under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014. Learn more about the legislation that gives legal protection to these monuments .

Ministerial Consent/Notification of Work

If there is an archaeological monument on lands where groundworks are proposed, it is important to note that prior written consent of the Minister or notice in writing to the Minister may be required. View or download these consent and notification forms .
