Minister Healy-Rae welcomes significant forestry licence output in 2025

Minister of State for Forestry, Farm Safety, and Horticulture, Michael Healy-Rae TD, has welcomed the highest number of forestry licences issued to date under Ireland’s 2023-2027 Forestry Programme, marking a major milestone for the sector in 2025.

Speaking today, Minister Healy-Rae said:

“When I took on this role ten months ago, I was determined to restore confidence in the forestry sector. A critical part of that is ensuring that those committing to forestry are supported through the system as quickly as possible. I’m delighted to announce that last week, my Department issued the highest number of licences since the launch of this Forestry Programme in 2023. Turnaround times have improved dramatically, with most licences now processed in under six months, and the storm-related cases are issuing even faster.

“Nearly twice as many new forests have been created this year compared to the same period in 2024. Felling licence output is up by over 17%, with more than 11,200 hectares of private forestry licensed so far in 2025. These results reflect significant improvements in our licensing processes and are a testament to the dedication of the professionals working in the Department.”

The Minister continued:

“In just ten months, we’ve seen a real shift in both performance and sentiment. A sector that was under pressure is now on a strong and positive trajectory.”

To further support engagement, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, in collaboration with Teagasc, is hosting a series of four free forestry information events in October and November. The first event took place, Tuesday, October 21, in Galway with others to follow in Kerry, Meath and Kilkenny.

Minister Healy-Rae, who is hosting all four events, commented:

“I look forward to meeting farmers and landowners at the each of the ‘Let’s Talk Trees’ events. These gatherings offer a valuable opportunity, especially for farmers, to explore how forestry can become part of a modern, resilient farm business.”

Attendees will have the chance to speak one-on-one with professional forestry staff about their interests and options.

The Minister concluded:

“In the months ahead, we will build on this momentum, deepen our engagement with landowners, and deliver the supports needed for forestry to thrive. Together, my Department and all stakeholders can shape a forestry sector that supports farmers, sustains jobs, and contributes to the future of rural Ireland.”
