What the register is
You must be on the register of fishmeal and blood product users in order to purchase these products or compound feed found which contains them.
This measure is required under EU law and is aimed at protecting animal and human health by preventing the spread of certain diseases known as Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSE).
What you must do
You must comply with the conditions of the scheme to be included on the register. For example fishmeal, blood products or feed which contains them must be sourced from approved operators. Feedingstuffs containing fishmeal or blood products must not be fed to ruminant animals including cattle, sheep, deer or goats.
Other steps that must be taken include:
- storage of fishmeal and blood products must be entirely separate from anything connected with any ruminant enterprise
- all ruminants must be effectively excluded from any area of the premises where fishmeal and blood products or feed containing them are stored or used
- feed containing fishmeal or blood products must not be purchased or handled on any land parcel other than the one listed in the application for registration
- there must be facilities available at feedmills to allow for reconciliation of purchases and usage of fishmeal and blood products
- it must also be possible to accurately account for the use of all other ingredients used in the manufacture of pig or poultry rations on the premises
The full terms and conditions are included on the application form for registration. If the applicant has ruminant animals or a current Department Herd number, an inspection of the premises will be carried out by a veterinary officer from the local District Veterinary Office prior to registration.
