What stud book approval is
Equine stud books record information on the pedigree of pure bred equines such as horses. The Department approves breed societies to maintain these records.
What a stud book is for
The stud book records the animal’s lineage, detailing all their known antecedents. Non-pedigree equines are not eligible for entry in a studbook.
The operation of stud books is governed by European Union regulations. The aim of the legislation is to promote the development of the equine industry by maintaining high standards and improving productivity.
The Department is the competent authority for granting approvals to maintain stud books under this legislation subject to the applicant having complied with the criteria for approval.
