On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Minister Norma Foley and Minister of State Emer Higgins have announced that the Department of Children, Disability, and Equality is now a JAM Card Friendly Organisation.
The JAM Card – “Just A Minute” – helps people with hidden disabilities or communication barriers let others know they may need a little extra time. Developed by the social enterprise NOW Group, it is a simple, discreet tool that supports people who benefit from a more patient interaction. By showing the small card or using the app, a JAM Card user can easily signal that they need a moment when carrying out everyday tasks or transactions.
Becoming JAM Card Friendly delivers on Programme for Government commitments to promote disability awareness and support the wider use of the JAM Card. Staff across the Department will now receive JAM Card awareness training to ensure everyone knows how to respond in an inclusive way.
Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley said:
“On International Day of Persons with Disabilities, it is fitting that we recognise that disabled people face both obvious and hidden barriers. Introducing the JAM card to our Department is a small change that can make a big difference. We want everyone who interacts with our Department to feel supported and understood, and I hope that this initiative will be another positive step in that direction.”
Minister of State with responsibility for Disability, Emer Higgins said:
“I’m really proud to see this work underway. The JAM Card is a small but meaningful step in creating a more welcoming, respectful environment for everyone who engages with our services. I’m committed to supporting practical actions like this that help build a more inclusive and person-centered public service.”
