Minister O’Gorman approves €1 million for new Youth Employability Initiative

  • €1 million fund approved following the evaluation of the Targeted Youth Employability Support Initiative (TYESI), delivered in 2021-2022
  • the initiative will support young people aged 15-24 years to return to education or take up training or employment
  • the TYESI will be administered by the national network of Education and Training Boards (ETBs) and delivered by youth organisations across the country

Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Roderic O’Gorman, has today announced a fund of €1 million to eighteen youth services for the delivery of support and interventions under the Targeted Youth Employability Support Initiative (TYESI).

The Initiative aims to increase young people’s employability skills and competencies through youth work, and follows a similar scheme which was delivered in 2021-2022.

The TYESI will be delivered by eighteen youth services across sixteen ETB areas between mid-2024 and 2027, providing wraparound support to enable young people overcome significant barriers and challenges in their lives. Collaborative partnerships will be developed in each local area, ensuring statutory, community and voluntary agencies, education and training providers and other relevant services will work together to enhance the opportunities for the young people. The scheme is intended to be complementary to the actions in support of the Department of Social Protection policy ‘Pathways to Work’.

Welcoming the initiative, Minister O’Gorman said:

“The Targeted Youth Employability Support Initiative is proven to be effective in supporting young people to develop their skills and competencies to return to education or to take up training or employment. Youth organisations are well positioned to provide the targeted support and interventions for these young people to progress in their lives and fulfil their potential."

The findings and recommendations of the Evaluation Report of the Targeted Youth Employability Support Initiative, delivered in 2021-2022 informed the development of the new scheme. The Evaluation sought to assess the impact of the initiative and to provide insights, findings and recommendations regarding the provision of support for young people aged 15-24 not in education, training or employment. The Evaluation demonstrated the suitability of the TYESI as a support mechanism to improve the employability skills of this target group of young people and the effectiveness of the initiative in positively contributing to the development of pathways towards education, training and employment opportunities.
