Climate Action in our Communities

Communities and local authorities play a central role in delivering climate action across Ireland.

Through a range of national and EU-supported programmes, funding and policies are in place to support local projects that reduce emissions, improve energy efficiency, encourage sustainable transport and protect biodiversity.

These initiatives help communities take part in the transition to a low-carbon economy, while supporting local development and quality of life.

Supporting local climate action

Funding is available to support climate action projects led by local authorities and community partners. This includes support for:

  • renewable energy and sustainability projects
  • improving the energy efficiency of public buildings
  • active travel and sustainable transport
  • transforming former landfill sites into community, tourism or recreational spaces
  • feasibility studies for future infrastructure projects

Additional funding is also provided to support:

  • Decarbonising Zones
  • Climate Action Regional Offices (CAROs)
  • cities participating in the EU Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Mission

Together, these programmes help local authorities deliver their Local Authority Climate Action Plans and work with communities on climate solutions.
