Our Energy Our Future
Renewable electricity is essential to Ireland’s energy security and is the foundation upon which we will achieve our climate targets.
Ireland has historically imported most of its energy, from fossil fuel sources. By investing in our own onshore and offshore renewable electricity, we will reduce our reliance on harmful imported fuels and improve our energy resilience to disruptions such as extreme weather, economic shocks, and cyberattacks.
The development and expansion of renewable electricity powers communities all over Ireland, generating thousands of jobs and stimulating local economies. Renewable electricity attracts investment and employment in clean technologies and support services, while Community Benefit Funds support sustainable community initiatives.
The Programme for Government commits to providing 80% of electricity from renewable sources in line with our climate targets.
