Consultation overview
The aim of this Public Consultation is to gather public and stakeholder feedback on the National Territory Mapping for Renewable Electricity. This is a requirement under the EU Renewable Energy Directive 2023/2413. (RED III).
Background
The EU Renewable Energy Directive 2023/2413 (REDIII) sets an overall renewable energy target of at least 42.5% binding at EU level by 2030 - but aiming for 45%. The Directive also requires EU Member States to carry out "national territory mapping" (under Article 15b), to identify the domestic potential and the available areas needed to install renewable energy plants and their related infrastructure to meet Ireland's national contributions towards the overall EU renewable energy target for 2030.
Under Article 15c of the Directive, competent authorities in Member States must identify at least 1 Renewable Acceleration Area (RAA), that is a subset of areas identified under the national territory mapping exercise.
The Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment is now seeking input from the public on the following:
- the national territory mapping that has been undertaken (under Article 15b); and on
- any key considerations that should be taken into account in preparing a draft plan for the designation of a Renewable Acceleration Area (under Article 15c)
