Energy Upgrades

If you're thinking about making your home or business more energy efficient, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) have a range of grants and supports available to help reduce costs and improve comfort. Since 2019, over a quarter of a million (257,000) home energy upgrades have been delivered, thanks to Government funding of €1.7 billion. Learn more about the new National Residential Retrofit Plan.

Simple upgrades like attic insulation, cavity wall, or external wall insulation can reduce heating bills by up to €230 annually. A full home retrofit can lead to savings of €750 to €1,120 per year on energy costs.

Individual energy upgrade grants (windows, doors, insulation)

The SEAI offers a range of grants to gradually upgrade the energy efficiency of your home. Individual grants are available for wall or attic insulation, new windows and doors, heat pumps, solar thermal and solar PV. Learn more about Individual Energy Upgrade Grants on the SEAI website.

Windows and doors

A new grant was introduced in March 2026 for the installation of energy-efficient windows and doors (to replace poorly performing windows and doors) for homes where the building fabric will meet or already meets a specified minimum performance standard. Find out more about the windows and doors grant on the SEAI website.

Attic insulation grant for first-time buyers

A new attic insulation grant for first-time buyers of existing homes helps you get started with energy upgrades quickly and at minimal cost. Find out more on the SEAI website.

If you have already received a grant for cavity or internal wall insulation, you may be eligible for a second grant to further improve your home's insulation, making it warmer and cheaper to heat. Learn more on the SEAI website.

Fully funded energy upgrades

If you are a homeowner and receive certain social welfare payments you may qualify for a free energy efficiency upgrade to your home. Check out the eligibility criteria on the SEAI website.

Complete home energy upgrade (One Stop Shop)

The National Home Energy Upgrade Scheme provides a complete home energy upgrade (deep retrofit) for your home and is managed via a One Stop Shop service provider. Go to One Stop Shop services for homes on the SEAI website.

Enhanced grants for homeowners on qualifying welfare payments

Homeowners on qualifying welfare payments are able to get higher grants for attic and cavity wall insulation. These grants often cover most or all of the cost and won’t affect your place on the Warmer Homes Scheme waiting list. For more information, on these grants, go to the SEAI website.

Solar PV Scheme for medically vulnerable customers

If a person in your household relies on life support equipment such as dialysis machines, ventilators, or similar devices, you may be entitled to free installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. To qualify the person must be registered with your electricity supplier under the life support category of the Priority Services Register, and then discuss eligibility with your supplier. Read about the Extension of Solar PV Scheme for Medically Vulnerable Customers on our website.

Loans to support home energy upgrades

If you need a loan to help fund your energy retrofit the Home Energy Upgrade Loan Scheme offers government backed loans up to €75,000 from as little as 2.99% interest. This loan must be used for home energy upgrades carried out by a SEAI Registered One Stop Shop or Project Co-ordinator.
