Statement of Research & Innovation Needs

The Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment (DCEE) Research and Innovation Strategy to 2030 commits to developing a Statement of Research and Innovation (R&I) Needs, updated every 3 years.

The Statement aims to identify and clearly communicate the key R&I questions that must be addressed to support the delivery of our Strategic Goals

We have developed a list of priority R&I questions through a process of strategic foresight and co-creation with our stakeholders. These priorities are outlined in the document available below.

The R&I questions are grouped into 5 high-level areas:

1) Climate Action and the Environment

2) Energy

3) Circular Economy, Resource Efficiency, Inland Fisheries and Geoscience

4) Marine

5) The Sustainable Development Goals

This Statement of R&I Needs will guide engagement with our R&I stakeholders to source the answers to our R&I questions. Initial efforts will focus on identifying existing research that can inform policy and connecting the relevant researchers with our policy teams.

Where the answers to our questions are not readily available, we will look to support new R&I initiatives to generate the required evidence. The Statement also provides direction for stakeholders seeking to have an impact on climate, energy and environment policy through research and innovation.

Questions about the statement can be sent to research.innovation@dcee.gov.ie.
