The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media is seeking to recruit a Communications Manager (Assistant Principal level) to work in our Communications Unit.
This role will be based in Dublin and candidates will require experience in communications management, media relations and digital media for this particular role. A panel may be established from this competition for this and for any future similar vacancies that may arise.
The role
Reporting to the Head of Communications, the successful candidate will contribute to the strategic communications leadership within the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, will provide senior level communications advice and inputs to the work of Divisions, and will help manage the day-to-day running of the communications team. Applicants wishing to be considered for appointment to this role will be required to demonstrate their capability of working through both English and Irish on a day-to-day basis, both written and spoken.
This role will involve the following: managing departmental communications to ensure aligned messaging across all Divisions, with media and digital audiences, and across Government; developing detailed communication plans and managing a team to execute these to optimum effect; managing and responding to incoming media queries; developing and managing internal communications strategies within the department.
Candidates’ standard of Irish will be assessed by way of a short written examination during the selection process, and in the interview itself.
Please note: Written exam will be set at B2 TEG level with a minimum required pass mark for candidates participating in this competition.
Duties of the post
Fully participate in small senior communications management team to:
- collaborate, both within the departmental communications team and across the department, to systemise the delivery of consistent, best-in-class, value-for-money citizen-focused communications
- develop and deliver the department's social media and digital communications strategy
- manage reactive media and ensure responses which appropriately reflect the important work of the department
- provide support and briefing to Ministers and spokespeople in preparation for media engagements and coordinate training if required – in both Irish and English
- support internal communications to build staff engagement with the objectives and strategic direction of the department, and collaborate with HR to drive a culture of trust, involvement and cross-team partnership throughout the organisation
- embed evidence and research into departmental communications plans and activities, ensuring such activities have a strong justification in terms of effective citizen engagement. Use trends and analysis to leverage data to develop engaging content for all media channels, social and traditional
- close liaison and interaction with all internal teams to determine publicity requirements and identify and plan opportunities
- represent the department in whole-of-government initiatives and inter-departmental fora and related strategic communications initiatives. Provide leadership in the implementation of such initiatives within the department
- support reputational risk management and crisis communications
- other tasks or duties as may be required by Manager
