Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is holding their AGM in the Convention Centre
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is holding its Annual General Meeting at the iconic Convention Centre Dublin from October 25th-30th, visiting Ireland for the first time since 2015.
ICANN is a multistakeholder, non-profit organisation responsible for coordinating the unique identifier systems of the Internet, ensuring the network’s stable and secure operation.
Welcoming ICANN back to Dublin, Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport Patrick O’Donovan TD said:
“I am delighted that ICANN have decided to bring their AGM to Dublin once more, particularly in such a landmark year for internet governance both at home and across the world. Building on the stellar work done by the Irish internet community in hosting the first Internet Governance Forum – Ireland earlier this year, ICANN84 is a great platform for Ireland to position itself at the centre of pivotal global discussions on the governance of the internet including the World Summit on the Information Society 20 year review.”
With its motto of “One World, One Internet”, ICANN’s mission is to help ensure a stable, secure and unified global Internet. Collaboration and cooperation across many stakeholder communities, comprising governments, businesses, civil society and technical experts, has been essential in preserving the free and open internet infrastructure that has enabled digital transformation and innovation to take place across all areas of Irish and global society.
The local host for this event is INEX, the Internet Exchange Point for the island of Ireland.
It is expected that around 2,000 people from all over the world will attend the meeting in Dublin.
Notes:
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a nonprofit organisation incorporated in the state of California, USA, with governance and oversight of its functions carried out by the global multistakeholder community.
ICANN's mission is to help ensure a stable, secure, and unified global Internet. To reach another person on the Internet, you need to type an address – a name or a number – into your computer or other device. That address must be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN helps coordinate and support these unique identifiers across the world.
ICANN meets three times a year. The upcoming meeting was originally planned to take place in Muscat, Oman. However, due to concerns over potential closures of airspaces in the region, the ICANN Board decided to relocate to Dublin.
The local host for this event, INEX, the Internet Exchange Point for the island of Ireland, is a neutral, not-for-profit organisation that enables internet networks to connect and exchange traffic efficiently.
