Launch of Digital Transformation Scheme

Patrick O’Donovan, T.D., Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, has today welcomed the launch by Coimisiún na Meán of the Digital Transformation Scheme. The Scheme has been developed in line with the recommendations of the Future of Media Commission and has been the subject of extensive consultation with the wider media sector.

€3 million in Exchequer funding has been allocated for the establishment of the Scheme this year. The Scheme will operate as a contestable award scheme on a platform neutral basis.

The Scheme aims to incentivise investment in technology and services by public service content providers, accelerating the development of sustainable business models in the sector and to provide support for the appropriate training and up-skilling of existing staff within the sector.

The Digital Transformation Scheme will assist media organisations in adapting their businesses to a more digital media landscape and ensure the continued provision of public service content which serves to inform the public, to maintain integrity of information and to preserve trust.

Applications for the Digital Transformation Scheme open today, Friday 26th September and close on Friday 24th October, 2025.

Minister O’Donovan said:

“The Digital Transformation Scheme will provide essential support for the media sector in adapting to a rapidly changing media landscape in both a national and a global context. The upskilling of staff within the sector, along with the modernisation of infrastructure and digital tools for business development and sustainability, are essential for promoting a plurality of voices in the sector and for assisting the media to thrive, while supporting the continued provision of trustworthy, objective and accessible public service content for our citizens”.

Commenting on the launch of the Journalism Schemes, Media Development Commissioner at Coimisiún na Meán, Rónán Ó Domhnaill said:

On behalf of Coimisiún na Meán, I want to thank Minister Patrick O’Donovan TD, Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, for his allocation of €3 million to support this innovative new Scheme.

Coimisiún na Meán is committed to ensuring a thriving, diverse and creative media landscape for Ireland, and to supporting innovation in Ireland’s media sector. How audiences consume media is changing and media outlets face challenges to keep pace with changing patterns of consumption. An Coimisiún has developed the new Digital Transformation Scheme to support the Irish media sector in this time of rapid transition, with a focus on two key areas – digital skills training and technology”.
