Minister O’Donovan to attend meeting of EU Culture, Media and Sports Ministers at the EYCS Council Meeting in Brussels

- The Danish Presidency has focussed on the contribution of Culture and Media to safeguarding European Democracy.
- Meeting to cover a range of topics including the new Strategic Frameworks for Culture and Sport at EU level, and the new EU funding structures for Culture and Media in the next Multiannual Financial Framework.
Today, Minister Patrick O’Donovan is representing Ireland at the EYCS Council meeting for Culture, Audiovisual, Media and Sports Ministers where he will be joined by Ministers from across the Union to discuss the future direction of EU culture, media and sport policy.
The meeting will include updates from the European Commission on its recently published Strategic Framework for Culture, the Culture Compass; the European Democracy Shield; Simplification Agenda; adoption of Council Conclusions on the strategic role of culture and cultural heritage in upholding European values and democratic resilience; and presentation of a progress report from the Danish Presidency on the proposed new EU funding programme for culture and media, Agora EU.
On Media, Council will discuss the role of a free, independent and pluralistic news media sector in upholding democratic values as part of the European Democracy Shield.
Minister O’Donovan will also attend a lunch debate to discuss shaping the future of culture in the age of artificial intelligence.
Speaking ahead of today’s meetings, Minister O’Donovan said:
I am pleased to be here in Brussels today for this important opportunity to engage with Ministers from across the Union to discuss the future of EU culture, media and sports policy whilst we work towards the Irish Presidency next year. We look forward to the presentation of the Commission’s new strategies and the proposals for future EU culture and media funding. I also welcome the opportunity to further engage with Ministers on our upcoming EU Presidency priorities.
