Minister Patrick O’Donovan announces €987,498 under the Artist Workspaces Scheme

The Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan TD, today announced arts capital grant awards of €987,498 to five Local Authorities for the development of up to 22 artist workspaces. This funding is provided under the Artist Workspaces Scheme, a €6m capital investment scheme for Local Authorities to enable them to provide additional capacity and availability of artist workspaces in their regions.

The Artist Workspaces scheme was originally launched on 12 June 2024. Today’s announcement brings the total awarded under this scheme to date at €1,208,854.

Under the scheme funding of up €300,000 is available for densely populated Local Authority areas. Funding of up to €150,000 is available for less densely populated areas. The scheme has no closing date and will remain open until the fund has been exhausted.

This €6 million capital scheme is in line with the Government’s commitment under the Programme for Government to increase the provision of affordable workspaces for artists and creative practitioners and ensure the timely delivery of arts and culture capital investment commitments, as outlined in Project Ireland 2040.

This scheme further compliments the €3 million funding the Department allocated to Dublin City Council in 2023 as part of the Space to Create Programme. This funding was allocated towards the provision of artist’s workspaces in a number of city centre locations and these projects are currently being progressed.

Speaking today Minister Patrick O’Donovan said:

“I am pleased to announce funding of €987,498 under the Artist Workspaces Scheme. I am acutely aware of the shortage of affordable creative spaces around the country. The lack of space has been a significant barrier for artists, limiting their ability to create and exhibit work. Todays announcement will assist in addressing the critical shortage of performance and work spaces for artists across the country”.
