Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan, and Minister for Sport and Postal Policy, Charlie McConalogue, will today convene a Sport and Environmental Sustainability Conference.
‘Playing for the Planet’ will be held at the National Indoor Arena at Sport Ireland’s Campus. The event will feature a range of speakers from sporting organisations across Ireland, including the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), Tennis Ireland, Canoeing Ireland and Golf Ireland.
The conference is being staged by the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport but will showcase sustainable sport initiatives from a range of Government departments including the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment and the Department of Transport.
The event will be attended by stakeholders from across the Irish sports sector including representatives of National Governing Bodies of Sport and Local Sports Partnerships.
It will promote environmental sustainability within the sector by showcasing best practice on the role that sport can play in climate action.
Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan, said:
“I would like today to acknowledge the sustainability work sporting organisations all over the country are doing. Today’s conference will hear about ground-breaking initiatives from a range of sporting organisations including the GAA, Muster Rugby, Golf Ireland and Bohemian Football Club. Sustainability in sport is essential to ensure that future generations inherit not only a love of sport but also a healthy environment in which to play and compete.”
Minister for Sport and Postal Policy, Charlie McConalogue, said:
“Sport is at the heart of communities in Ireland and is therefore uniquely placed to reach across society in order to drive environmental improvements and inspire sustainability action generally. Today’s conference represents a key action of the Sports Action Plan 2024-2027 and my Department will ensure that sustainability remains to the fore as we continue to deliver our planned actions.”
