Application from RTÉ under Section 103 of the Broadcasting Act 2009

In November 2024, RTÉ submitted a proposal seeking consent to close four digital radio stations (DRS); RTÉ Radio 1 Extra, RTÉ 2XM, RTÉ Pulse and RTÉjr Radio. These proposed changes require ministerial approval under Section 103 (2) of the Broadcasting Act 2009 (as amended). In particular, the Minister is required to:

  • Consult with RTÉ and such other persons they consider appropriate,
  • Consult with Coimisiún na Meán on the sectoral impact of the proposal, and
  • Consider the public value of the proposal.

The process has concluded, and the Minister has consented to the proposal. As per Section 103(4)(d) of the Broadcasting Act 2009, a report on the consultation process and the Minister’s decision are linked below
