Schools Reconfiguration for Diversity

Schools should fully reflect the diversity of Irish society, so students of all religions and none can have access to education regardless of their belief system.

The Minister for Education published a framework and action plan aimed at helping to achieve the Programme for Government commitment to seek to increase choice for parents by ensuring that families can access both multi/non-denominational and faith-based education.

A multi-denominational school is a school under a non-religious patron, where children learn about all faiths and belief systems through a multi-denominational programme. Examples include Community National Schools in the ETB sector, Educate Together schools and An Foras Pátrúnachta schools. Currently 172 of our schools have a multi-denominational (or inter-denominational) ethos.
