Contact with the National Council for Special Education (NCSE): Planning for special school and class placement

The majority of children with special education needs are supported to attend mainstream classes in their local school with their peers. They are supported by class teachers and increasing numbers of additional special education teachers and Special Needs Assistants as necessary. However, for some children with more complex needs a special class or special school place may be required. As part of the forward planning for special education provision, the NCSE aims to assist parents seeking a special class/school placement for their child/young person. If you have not already been in contact with the NCSE in relation to your child(ren) who may require special class provision (primary or post-primary level), or special school provision, please click on the following link to the dedicated page on the NCSE website: https://ncse.ie/notify-ncse-special-class-special-school.

By following the steps outlined on this webpage, the NCSE will explain what information will be required from you and will guide you through the process of registering eligibility for special class/school placement. Where possible, contact with the NCSE for this purpose should be made via this link as soon as possible in order to inform NCSE forward planning.

When will the survey results be available?

We will publish initial high-level summary results in Summer 2025. We will send out more detailed summary reports to each school in an anonymous format in Autumn 2025.

What will happen with the survey results?

A good response rate will be important in analysing the outcomes of the survey. We will use the survey results to input into our analysis of national, local and school-specific data to help us with planning at primary school level.

We will work with relevant stakeholders on actioning the outcomes from the surveys in the context of future school planning. This survey is not a final step. Where there is clear support from parents and guardians for change to be considered, a further process of inclusive dialogue will begin.
