A survey of primary schools carried out in early 2016 by the Department of Education and Skills showed the variety of uses of school buildings in a significant proportion of schools in Ireland. The range of activities includes after-school activities, homework clubs, breakfast clubs, summer camps, sporting and other activities for children as well as the facilitation of community groups in the evening. Such use of school buildings for recreational and community purposes is encouraged by the Department.
