I am Creative is the first programme developed specifically for special educational settings and in response to research recommendations that informed the Creative Youth Plan 2023-2027. Initially piloted in 2023/2024, it brings together teachers, creative practitioners, Special Needs Assistants and school leaders. They train together to support the delivery of creative collaborative residencies in special schools or special classes.
The initial pilot in 2023 included two Education Support Centres (ESCs) along with several special education classes and schools. In 2024, the initiative welcomed seven further schools and their creative partners, extending to six additional ESCs in 2025/2026.
A review of the programme has been carried out, and the findings have been published in this evaluation report. Together with the video testimonials, it demonstrates the impact of I am Creative, an initiative led by the Department of Education and Youth in supporting children in special educational settings to embrace creative opportunities.
Applications for I am Creative open in April and close in June.
