Supporting children and young people whose home language is neither Irish nor English: Guide for Gaeltacht and Irish-medium schools

Guidance was issued to schools in February 2026: Supporting children and young people whose home language is neither Irish nor English. This guide provides practical suggestions to support leaders, teachers, and practitioners in integrating newcomer learners — those with Irish and English as additional languages — into Irish-medium and Gaeltacht schools. Its aim is to support schools in developing a whole-school approach, whereby all students — regardless of their language background — can access the curriculum through Irish and contribute to school life in a meaningful way.
