Continued support for Ireland’s EU membership welcomed by Minister Thomas Byrne

The Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne, has today welcomed the publication of the 2025 EU Poll by European Movement Ireland.

This year’s findings offer clear evidence of the Irish people’s strong and enduring support for Ireland’s membership of the European Union. The poll confirms that a strong majority of respondents in Ireland believe our future lies within the EU with 82% expressing support for continued EU membership.

Minister Byrne said it is particularly notable that those surveyed see EU membership as a good thing for Ireland and that overall, trust in the EU remains high. This reflects a broad public recognition of the role the Union plays in safeguarding our economy, supporting our security and defence cooperation, and enhancing our voice on the global stage.

Minister Byrne commented:

“The publication of the 2025 poll by European Movement Ireland serves as an important barometer of public opinion and a reminder of the responsibility we share to protect and enhance Ireland’s role in Europe.”

Minister Byrne continued:

“It is clear that most Irish people believe that we have benefitted from our EU membership but we cannot take that positivity for granted and we must not be complacent. In advance of Ireland taking on the EU Presidency in the second-half of 2026, I look forward to engaging with communities across Ireland, to communicate what our EU Presidency means, and how the EU delivers for its citizens.”
