Minister of State for European Affairs at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Thomas Byrne TD, today attended the G20 Trade & Investment ministerial meeting in Eastern Cape, South Africa.
The meeting covered trade and inclusive growth, including addressing global challenges and sustainability, and WTO reform.
Ministers recognised that trade and investment can be a driver of economic growth, development, job creation, technological progress and contribute to global food security. They also noted the need to strive to ensure that the benefits of trade reach all segments of society and that all people have the opportunity to benefit from trade.
Speaking about Ireland’s participation at the G20 meeting, Minister Byrne said:
“This G20 meeting is a welcome opportunity for dialogue and action aimed at creating an inclusive trade agenda. As a proud member of the EU, Ireland is committed to efforts to build an open and fair global trading system, underpinned by the rules-based multilateral system with the WTO at its core. It was great to hear from WTO Director General, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on the urgency of the WTO reform process.”
Speaking about the focus on trade and inclusive growth, Minister Byrne said:
“Free and fair trade undoubtedly brings economic opportunities, creates well-paid jobs, fosters innovation and builds economic resilience. In this regard, Ireland has been supportive of the G20 Presidency’s efforts and emphasis on measures than can help nurture the relationship between trade and inclusive growth.”
