The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Helen McEntee TD, spoke this evening with the new Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, Tom Berendsen. Minister McEntee welcomed Minister Berendsen to his role and discussed the positive relationship between Ireland and the Netherlands, as we prepare to work closely together during Ireland’s EU Presidency later this year.
During the call, Minister McEntee and Minister Berendsen both expressed their deep concern at the growing escalation of the conflict in Iran, the Middle East and the Gulf region, and the urgent need for de-escalation. They were also clear that international law and international humanitarian law cannot be set aside.
Speaking after the call, Minister McEntee said: “The Netherlands is a hugely valued partner to Ireland and I welcome the opportunity to engage with Minister Berendsen so early in his new role and during such a challenging time.
“Minister Berendsen and I discussed our alarm at the intensification of attacks across the Middle East and wider region, and the need for urgent de-escalation to prevent this conflict widening and to prevent further loss of life.
“We also discussed our deep concern for the safety of the thousands of Irish and Dutch citizens across the Gulf region, shared plans for evacuations and discussed the possibilities for mutual support.”
The call was also an opportunity to discuss Ireland and the Netherlands’ shared commitment and continued support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s ongoing war of aggression.
In view of Ireland’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union from July, the Ministers also focused on priorities across the EU agenda. As strong bilateral and European partners, Minister McEntee welcomed the opportunity to work in close partnership with the new Dutch government in the time ahead.
