Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, Neale Richmond TD, participated in an informal meeting of EU Foreign Ministers by video conference today, 26 November.
Ministers discussed developments in Ukraine, in particular US peace proposals, the ongoing talks in Geneva and the EU’s next steps to support the process. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha joined at the beginning of the meeting and provided the latest information from the Ukrainian side, including regarding efforts to achieve a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in Ukraine and ongoing Russian attacks.
Speaking after the meeting, Minister Richmond stated: “This is a critical moment for Ukraine and for Europe. Today’s meeting was an important opportunity to demonstrate continuing EU solidarity and support for Ukraine. The engagement by the United States in support of peace is welcome. We need to see an outcome that leads to a just and lasting peace, that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence and which protects Ukraine and Europe’s security.”
The Minister continued: "This includes maintaining pressure on Russia through stronger sanctions and targeting the shadow fleet. There is an urgent need to find agreement on financing for Ukraine. We also need to move on opening EU accession negotiations for Ukraine. Ireland is committed to working to secure progress on these in the coming period.”
