Tánaiste meets Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

Tánaiste, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Minister for Defence Micheál Martin last night met the Canadian Prime Minister, Mr Justin Trudeau.
This meeting during St Patrick’s week was an opportunity to acknowledge the shared values and priorities of Ireland and Canada in the 85th year of our diplomatic relations. Prime Minister Trudeau and the Tánaiste discussed the situation in Gaza, Northern Ireland and Canada’s ongoing support for the Peace Process, Ukraine, and the strength and vibrancy of the Irish community in Canada.
The Tánaiste said:
"As part of my St Patrick’s Day visit to Canada, I was delighted to meet Prime Minister Trudeau to reaffirm the strong bonds of friendship that exist between our two countries. I hope that my visit will further strengthen those bonds, based on our heritage and our common values. Ireland and Canada stand together as we face serious challenges to international peace and security.”
The Prime Minister and the Tánaiste acknowledged both countries’ longstanding and continued commitment to democracy, peace and security. On the Middle East, the Tánaiste reiterated that Ireland is focused on the urgent need for a humanitarian ceasefire and for sustained humanitarian assistance to be provided for the over 2 million desperate civilians in Gaza.
The Tánaiste also briefed PM Trudeau on the positive political developments in Northern Ireland including the restoration of the Assembly and Executive. He thanked PM Trudeau and the Canadian Government for their support of the Northern Ireland peace process over many years.
The Tánaiste said:
"Prime Minister Trudeau and I had the opportunity to discuss Canada and Ireland’s shared values and priorities, including our commitment to peace, security and democracy, particularly in the context of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. On behalf of the Irish Government, I reiterated our appreciation of Canada’s longstanding support of the Northern Ireland peace process.”
