Dr Ellen Crushell, a UCC graduate, is a consultant paediatrician with special interest in inherited metabolic disorders at Temple Street and Crumlin Children’s hospitals.
She qualified as a general paediatrician prior to fellowship training in Inherited Metabolic Disorders at the Department of Clinical and Metabolic Genetics at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), Toronto where she gained experience in the recently expanded Ontario newborn screening programme.
She has been a member of the national newborn screening governance group and is involved in many international collaborative studies – including the development of international guidelines for newborn screening and treatment of homocystinuria, drawing on Ireland’s long experience of newborn screening for this condition.
Dr Crushell is an associate clinical professor with University College Dublin.
In 2017 she was elected Dean of the Faculty of Paediatrics at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (3 year term), this is the training and professional body for paediatrics in Ireland.
Dr Crushell is co-chair of the paediatric clinical advisory group and of the joint RCPI/RCPCH All-Ireland paediatric committee.
She is a council member of the European Paediatric Association (EPA/UNEPSA) and was president of the 9th Europaediatrics conference, hosted in Dublin last June.
